Since the Sims were a big hit when they first came out . EA started thinking of new ways to improve the gameplay itself and to add more life to the game . After releaseing 7 expansion they started working on The Sims 2 wich is a stand-alone game that doesn't need any previous game to run .

When you first play the game you have to make your own character and will control that very same person through the game . It sounds boring but its very interesting once you start playing it .
